🛒 This Week’s H Mart Burnaby Steals
While walking through the aisles on North Road, two items placed side by side caught my eye:
- TokiPoki Tteokbokki (Spicy, Speed Restaurant): On sale for $4.99 (Regularly $8.99 — 44% off)
- Signature Selection Square Fried Fish Cake: 43% off
The TokiPoki package is originally designed as a quick, microwave-friendly single serving. While it's great for a 3-minute office snack, the ingredients make an incredible, budget-friendly base for a loaded stovetop meal.
By combining it with a package of Samyang Buldak Carbonara ramen and simple fridge staples, you get Rabokki (ramen + tteokbokki)—the ultimate Korean comfort food.
🍜 Buldak Carbonara Rabokki Recipe
Ingredients
Base & Proteins:
- 1 package TokiPoki Tteokbokki (rice cakes + sauce packet)
- 1 package Samyang Buldak Carbonara ramen (noodles + liquid sauce + powder packet)
- A generous handful of Korean square fish cake, sliced into bite-sized strips
- 1 FREYBE sausage (or any smoked sausage/hot dog), sliced
- 2 hard-boiled eggs
Vegetables & Broth:
- 1–2 cups green cabbage, roughly chopped
- 1 stalk green onion, chopped
- 500 ml water (keep an extra 100 ml handy)
Optional additions: Sliced mushrooms, carrots, onions, or frozen Korean mandu (dumplings).
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Build the Sauce Base: Pour 500 ml of water into a medium pot. Stir in 1/4 of the TokiPoki sauce packet and 1/4 of the Buldak liquid sauce. Bring to a gentle boil over medium-high heat.
- Simmer the Veggies & Rice Cakes: Add the rice cakes and chopped cabbage. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes until the rice cakes start to soften.
- Add Noodles & Proteins: Add the Buldak ramen noodles, sliced fish cake, sausage, and boiled eggs into the pot.
- Cook to Desired Texture: Let everything simmer for 3 to 4 minutes, stirring occasionally so the noodles and rice cakes don’t stick to the bottom. If the sauce thickens too fast, splash in an extra 50–100 ml of water.
- Finish with Cheese Powder: Turn off the heat. Sprinkle the Buldak Carbonara cheese powder packet over the noodles and stir gently until completely dissolved and creamy.
- Garnish & Serve: Top with plenty of chopped green onions and serve immediately straight from the pot while piping hot.
🌶️ Sunny’s Pro Cooking Tips
1. The "Quarter-Packet" Rule for Spiciness
Do not dump both full sauce packets into the pot at once! Even if you enjoy spicy food, combining full packets of concentrated tteokbokki sauce and Buldak hot sauce can easily overwhelm your palate.
- Start with 1/4 packet of each sauce.
- As the broth reduces, the flavors concentrate naturally.
- Taste the broth around minute 5—you can always add a few drops more, but once it's overly spicy, diluting it with water makes the sauce runny rather than rich.
2. How to Prep & Store Leftover Fish Cake
The sale bag of Korean square fish cakes is huge. Unless you're cooking for a crowd, you won't use it all in one meal.
- Freeze in Portions: Slice the remaining sheets into squares or strips, separate them into snack-sized Ziploc bags, and freeze them flat.
- Winter Comfort Food: During cold, rainy Vancouver evenings, drop a handful of frozen fish cake slices directly into instant dashi broth with frozen udon noodles and scallions for an effortless 5-minute Eomuk Udon.
Was This H Mart Deal Worth It?
Verdict: Absolutely, 10/10.
For $4.99, the TokiPoki package gave us a substantial foundation of chewy rice cakes and a flavorful sauce base. Paired with discounted fish cake and pantry staples, this created two full, restaurant-quality servings for less than what you would pay for a single bowl at a casual diner.
If you are planning your weekend grocery trip, head down to H Mart Burnaby, grab these while the flyer is active, and try making it your own!
