Welcome to Vancouver K-Town: Where to Find Authentic Korean Fried Chicken
My name is Sunny. I have lived in Canada for more than 20 years and spent much of that time running my own businesses. As I began a new chapter in my life, I decided to study professional hair coloring and turn my long-standing interest in beauty into a new career.
Today, I work as a hair colorist specializing in gray coverage right in the heart of Lougheed Koreatown, along North Road.
Because I both live and work in this neighborhood, K-Town is more than a place I occasionally visit. It is part of my everyday life. I see the restaurants Korean families return to, the cafes where young people gather, the latest beauty trends arriving from Korea, and the small businesses that give this neighborhood its special warmth and personality.
Through this blog, I want to introduce international visitors to the vibrant, real-life K-Town that exists in Metro Vancouver in 2026.
Vancouver and British Columbia will remain the main focus of my travel guides, but authentic Korean food, beauty, culture, and hospitality will be a special bonus along the way.
You do not necessarily need to plan a separate trip to Korea to enjoy a meaningful taste of Korean culture. While visiting Vancouver, you can walk through a lively Korean neighborhood, enjoy authentic Korean food, shop for popular Korean products, relax in Korean-style cafes, and experience the warmth and energy of the community—all in one convenient area.
My goal is to help travelers discover not only Vancouver’s famous mountains, ocean views, and city attractions, but also the diverse local communities that make this region so special.
Think of it as a Vancouver vacation with an unexpected K-culture experience included.
Welcome to Vancouver K-Town. Let’s explore it together!
📍 What Is Lougheed Koreatown?
Lougheed Koreatown is centered along North Road, near the border of Burnaby and Coquitlam. It is conveniently located close to Lougheed Town Centre SkyTrain Station, and much of the neighborhood can be explored on foot.
This area is home to a lively collection of Korean restaurants, bakeries, cafes, grocery stores, hair salons, beauty businesses, traditional health clinics, dental offices, massage studios, optical shops, travel agencies, and specialty stores.
It is not a staged tourist attraction or a recreation of Korean culture. It is a living community where Korean families work, shop, dine, and gather every day.
That is what makes Lougheed Koreatown especially interesting for travelers. You can experience authentic Korean flavors and everyday culture without leaving Metro Vancouver.
The Ultimate K-Food Icon: Korean Fried Chicken
What better way to begin our Vancouver K-Town journey than with one of Korea’s most popular comfort foods—Korean fried chicken?
In Korea, fried chicken is closely connected to chimaek culture. The word chimaek combines chicken and maekju, the Korean word for beer. Sharing crispy fried chicken and cold drinks with friends or family has become a beloved part of modern Korean food culture.
Compared with many traditional North American styles of fried chicken, Korean fried chicken is often known for its lighter, crispier coating and wide variety of flavorful sauces.
From classic sweet-and-spicy yangnyeom to honey garlic, soy garlic, and extra-crispy original flavors, there is something for almost every taste.
For my first local K-food guide, I selected two well-known Korean chicken restaurants in the Lougheed K-Town area. Each represents a different side of Korean fried chicken culture: one offers the nostalgic taste of a longtime Korean classic, while the other represents the bold, modern flavors that helped K-chicken become popular around the world.
1. Pelicana Chicken: A Taste of Korean Nostalgia
“Light, crispy, and delightfully authentic.”
Pelicana Chicken holds a special place in Korean fried chicken history. Founded in Korea in 1982, it is one of the brands that helped popularize Korean-style seasoned chicken.
For many Koreans, Pelicana is more than a restaurant brand. Its familiar flavor brings back memories of sharing fried chicken with family and friends.
Why I Recommend It
Light and crispy coating: The batter feels relatively light and thin, allowing the juicy texture and natural flavor of the chicken to stand out.
Classic yangnyeom flavor: Pelicana is especially well known for its traditional sweet-and-spicy seasoned chicken. The sauce offers the familiar balance of sweetness, savouriness, and gentle heat that many Koreans associate with classic K-chicken.
Good for traditional tastes: If you prefer a cleaner chicken flavor without extremely heavy seasoning, Pelicana is a good place to begin.
Great with Korean side dishes: If available, pair your chicken with tteokbokki, Korean spicy rice cakes. The chewy rice cakes and crispy chicken make a satisfying Korean comfort-food combination.
Sunny’s Pick
For first-time visitors, I recommend ordering half original fried chicken and half yangnyeom chicken if the combination is available. This lets you compare the crispy original style with Korea’s classic sweet-and-spicy sauce.

2. bb.q Chicken: Bold Flavors and Modern K-Chicken
“Extra crispy, juicy, and full of modern Korean flavor.”
bb.q Chicken represents the modern, globally popular side of Korean fried chicken.
The brand has gained international recognition and has appeared in popular Korean dramas, helping introduce K-chicken culture to audiences around the world.
If Pelicana brings back the nostalgic flavor of classic Korean chicken, bb.q Chicken offers bold sauces, an extra-crispy texture, and a wide selection of modern flavors.
Why I Recommend It
Distinctively crispy texture: The chicken is hand-battered and fried at a lower temperature for a longer period, creating a light and crispy exterior while keeping the inside tender and juicy.
Golden-style fried chicken: The signature Golden Fried or Golden Original style is an excellent choice for anyone who wants to appreciate the crunch and natural flavor of the chicken.
Plenty of sauce choices: Depending on the current local menu, you may find popular options such as Honey Garlic, Soy Garlic, Secret Sauced, Cheesling, and spicy gochujang-based flavors.
Easy choice for groups: The wide selection makes bb.q Chicken a convenient option for families, gatherings, and first-time visitors with different flavor preferences.
Sunny’s Pick
If it is your first visit, try one original-style chicken and one sauced flavor. Honey Garlic is approachable for visitors who prefer something sweet and mild, while Secret Sauced is a good choice for a richer Korean-style flavor.

Pelicana or bb.q Chicken: Which One Should You Choose?
Both restaurants are good introductions to Korean fried chicken, but they offer slightly different experiences.
| Choose Pelicana if you prefer… | Choose bb.q Chicken if you prefer… |
|---|---|
| A lighter, more traditional flavor | An extra-crispy modern style |
| Classic Korean yangnyeom sauce | A wider variety of bold sauces |
| Nostalgic Korean comfort food | Trendy, globally popular K-chicken |
| Simple original and seasoned chicken | Plenty of choices for a group |
If you have enough time—and a good appetite—try both and decide which style you prefer!
💡 Sunny’s Local Tip: Turn Dinner Into a K-Town Experience
One of the best things about visiting Lougheed Koreatown is that you do not have to stop after one meal. You can turn your visit into a relaxed Korean cultural experience.
1. Visit a Korean Grocery Store
Before or after your meal, stop by Hannam Supermarket or H Mart to explore Korean groceries and everyday products.
You can browse fresh produce, Korean snacks, instant noodles, frozen foods, sauces, side dishes, drinks, and household products. For international travelers, a Korean supermarket can be a cultural experience of its own.
Popular souvenir ideas include:
Korean instant ramen
Seaweed snacks
Traditional teas
Packaged cookies and candies
Gochujang and Korean sauces
Beauty and personal-care products
2. Try a Korean Bakery or Cafe
Finish your visit with a stop at a Korean bakery or cafe. Depending on where you go, you may find soft Korean-style breads, cakes, iced lattes, traditional teas, or bingsu—a Korean shaved-ice dessert topped with fruit, red beans, rice cakes, or condensed milk.
Korean cafes are not just places to grab coffee. They are an important part of modern Korean social culture, where friends gather and spend time together over drinks and desserts.
3. Explore the Local Businesses
As you walk around North Road, look beyond the restaurants. The salons, markets, clinics, cafes, and family-run shops are all part of the neighborhood’s character.
This is where Lougheed Koreatown feels most authentic: it is not designed only for visitors. It is a real community that continues to grow and change.
A Vancouver Trip With a Taste of Korea

You may not be traveling all the way to Seoul, but here in Lougheed Koreatown, you can still experience Korean flavors, trends, hospitality, and everyday community life.
